Have you ever thought about what it was like for gold miners seeking to strike it rich during the Gold Rush? Relive the experience with By the Great Horn Spoon! by Sid Fleischman. I listened to a dramatic audio version and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Twelve year old Jack and his trusty partner Praiseworthy (his butler) set out from Boston as stowaways on a ship traveling to San Francisco, California. They hope to strike it rich to save their home from bank collectors trying to take it. Follow along as they venture off in search of gold. But through twists and turns of the story, they began to realize that their luck might run out.
This story is full of well-written plots, suspense, and hair-raising description. But the biggest surprise is at the end. I definitely learned much more about the Gold Rush than I ever would have from a history textbook. I felt like I was there with them shaking gold pans in the river. Grab your pick ax and go read this book.
