Many people, including myself, enjoy playing miniature golf. But have you ever wondered how this sport came to be? The Bugle Blast did some research to bring you this story.
John Carter from Chattanooga, Tennessee loved the sport of golf, but he was not very good at it. He also enjoyed being with his family, but it seemed there were not many places to go just for families. In the late 1920’s, John had an idea! What if he created a miniature golf course created specifically for families to hang out together. He excitedly started building what he called the “Tom Thumb Golf Course.” The players could only use putters to get the ball through all of the fun little obstacles and into the cup.
John Carter’s “Tom Thumb” course soon became a big hit and imitators started opening their own courses around the country. This new way of golf soon took on the name “miniature golf” or “putt putt golf.”
