During spring break, my family and I traveled to Florida to visit my grandparents. One of the things I got to do there was to make a butter lamb. This is a Polish tradition. The butter lamb reminds us of the goodness of Christ that we should have toward all things.
So how did I make it, you ask? First, take a stick of butter and cut a third of it off. Put this smaller piece on top to act as the head of the lamb. Then, smooth out the body to make it go from a block to more rounded like a lamb. Next, make ears, a nose and hind legs with a butter knife. Then, take a slightly softer butter and put it in a garlic press. Squeeze the press and out will come what looks like butter wool. With the butter knife, remove the butter wool and place it on your butter lamb. Keep doing this until it looks realistic. As for the eyes, use peppercorns, and use cinnamon to darken the nose. Lastly, for a final touch, tie a red ribbon around its neck. It’s hard to watch, but your lamb will be eaten with a traditional Polish Easter meal. I encourage you to do this project next year and maybe it will become a tradition for you.
