One book I have recently read is Holes by Louis Sachar. I loved this interesting story and recommend it to kids my age all the way up to adults.
Stanley Yelnats is under a family curse that began with his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig stealing-great-great-grandfather.” Because of the curse, Stanley has been unjustly accused of stealing famous sneakers. Instead of going to jail, he chooses to go to Camp Green Lake, a child detention facility in a desert. Every day the kids must dig holes five feet wide and five feet deep. Why are they digging holes? Is it really to build character or is the warden looking for something? It is up to him and his friend Zero to dig up the truth.
I think this Newbury Award winning book will be a good fit for you. Everything ties up perfectly at the end of the novel. Also read “Small Steps” by Louis Sachar, the sequel to Holes, telling what two kids do after they have been released from Camp Green Lake.
